NRC CONFIRMATION THAT AMERICAN CENTRIFUGE OPERATINGS LICENSE AUTHORIZES POSSESSION AND USE OF CERTAIN RADIOACTIVE SOURCES (EPID L-2021-LLL-0020)
Dear Ms. Fitch:
By letter dated September 27, 2021 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML21271A236), American Centrifuge Operating (ACO), a wholly owned subsidiary of Centrus Energy Corp., notified the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) of its plan to introduce radioactive sources into the American Centrifuge Plant (ACP) in Piketon, Ohio, to support testing the operability of the Criticality Accident Alarm System for ACOs High-Assay Low-Enriched Uranium Demonstration cascade.
ACO provided a list of the radioactive sealed sources and the total radioactivity limits to the NRC. Based on a review of that information, the NRC staff has confirmed that the possession and use of each of the radioactive sealed sources ACO has identified is authorized under License SNM-2011, Amendment 13. No further NRC action or approval is required for ACO to possess and use these sources under License SNM-2011, Amendment 13.
In accordance with Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations Section 2.390, Public inspections, exemptions, requests for withholding, of the NRCs Agency Rules of Practice and Procedure, a copy of this letter will be available electronically for public inspection in the NRC Public Document Room or from the Publicly Available Records component of the NRCs ADAMS. ADAMS is accessible from the NRC website at http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/adams.html (the Public Electronic Reading Room).
