SUMMARY

OF SEPTEMBER 13-14, 2021, CLOSED MEETINGS TO DISCUSS A NEW PROCESS TO PURIFY URANIUM AT NUCLEAR FUEL SERVICES, INC.

On September 13-14, 2021, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission held two closed meetings with Nuclear Fuel Services, Inc. (NFS) to discuss a new process to purify uranium at their facility in Irwin, Tennessee. The meeting notices are available in the NRCs Agencywide Documents Access and Management System at Accession No. ML21245A298 and ML21245A297. The presentation slides from both meetings are not publicly available due to the proprietary nature of the information contained there within. These were teleconference meetings, and an attempt was made to capture a list of the attendees as they called into the meetings. The enclosed attendance list provides the attendees for each meeting, as captured by the NRC staff who helped facilitate the meeting.

During the meetings, the NFS staff provided a general overview of their progress on the technical design for facility changes to support the National Nuclear Security Administration contract for highly enriched uranium conversion and purification services. In addition to the general overview, NFS presented more detailed information on their consideration of:

  • Integrated safety analysis, nuclear criticality safety, radiation protection, and fire safety (on September 13, 2021); and
