INDIAN POINT NUCLEAR GENERATING, UNIT NOS. 2 AND 3 - CHANGE IN U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION STAFF PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Dear Mr. Oneid and Ms. Sterdis:

On September 23, 2021, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff project management for Indian Point Nuclear Generating, Unit Nos. 2 and 3 (IP2 and IP3), transferred from the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation, Division of Operating Reactor Licensing, Plant Licensing Branch I, to the Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards (NMSS), Division of Decommissioning, Uranium Recovery, and Waste Programs (DUWP), Reactor Decommissioning Branch (RDB). This transfer is in accordance with internal NRC office interface agreements and is based on the completion of certain licensing actions that establish a licensing and safety basis reflecting the permanently shutdown and defueled condition of IP2 and IP3. This change in regulatory oversight will enhance NRC processing of any decommissioning-related licensing actions that you may elect to submit, and it will secure NMSS experience and expertise in the evaluation of any future dismantlement, decontamination, spent fuel storage, reactor vessel transportation, and license termination activities.

Mr. Karl J. Sturzebecher, NMSS/DUWP/RDB, has been assigned as the new project manager for IP2 and IP3 and will relieve Mr. Richard Guzman of his duties effective September 26, 2021.
