summary of 8/6 NRC/NNEPA call Date: Friday, August 06, 2021 6:00:33 PM
Below is a summary of our call today. Please reply all if you have any corrections or additions.
Have a great weekend!
- 1. NRC public meeting update Christine gave an update on plans for the Sept. 1 open house and tentative plans to meet on 8/31 (time TBD) with the Standing Rock Chapter officials at the community center. The staff have requested permission from NRC leadership to travel to NM for the meetings. We have also asked the NN Dept of Health for any concerns with the public meeting. In the meantime, will keep moving forward with plans.
Lee Anna asked about the newspaper ads - those announcing the public meetings and those providing additional information about the project. Christine indicated that she was expecting to place ads about the public meeting during the Aug 16-31 timeframe and that she is working with the newspapers to get the format and content of the 8-page insert ready (note that the 8 page newspaper format is about 24 pages in Word).
- 2. Follow up regarding Pipeline Community meeting Lee Anna noted she will be meeting with the community this evening and will let us know if the community is still interested in meeting on 8/31 or the morning of 9/1.
- 3. Email to Director Shirley re: offering meeting NRC staff will be sending an email to Director Shirley offering a meeting with NRC. Purpose of the meeting would be to hear any concerns or questions from NNEPA and to explain or clarify the agencies roles in the Church Rock mine waste cleanup.
- 4. Resolution of DEIS comments NRC staff explained that we are reviewing NNEPAs comments on the DEIS and intend to provide NNEPA staff with a document providing either early draft responses or plans for responding to the comments. The NRC indicated the importance of dialogue on responses to comments because they will drive changes in the final EIS. NNEPA indicated their preference for the document in August or September to help inform additional comments they intend to submit by November 1. NRC clarified that resolving NNEPA comments on the DEIS does not have to be complete by November 1. NRC also reminded NNEPA that, in addition, to reviewing comment responses, eventually NNEPA will be able to review a preliminary draft of the Final EIS once its prepared.
