Sea turtle Incidental Take Report 07-1-21.pdf Attached is the Incidental Take Report for a deceased Kemps ridley sea turtle collected on 07/01/2021 from the Salem Generating Station during routine raking of the cooling water intake trash bars. Based on the decayed condition, the Marine Mammal Stranding Center declined to take possession of the specimen for potential necropsy. This incidental take is authorized under Biological Opinion NER-2010-6581.

Incident Report Sea Turtle Take - PSEG Salem Generating Station Photographs should be taken and the following information should be collected from all turtles and sturgeon (alive and dead) found in association with Salem. Please submit all turtle necropsy results (including sex and stomach contents) to NMFS upon receipt.

Marine Mammal Stranding Center was contacted in regards to their interest in taking possession of the turtle.
However, due to poor condition, MMSC staff directed ECSI personnel to discard the specimen.

Fate of animal (circle one): dead alive Condition of animal (include comments on injuries, whether the turtle is healthy or emaciated, general behavior while at Salem. During routine trash rack cleaning, Salem Yard Crew personnel retrieved a deceased Kemps ridley sea turtle from Salem Unit 1, 11B circulator intake bay. Salem Unit Control and PSEG Nuclear Environmental Affairs personnel were notified. After contacting PSEG Nuclear Environmental Affairs (NEA) personnel, Environmental Consulting Services Inc. (ECSI) personnel verified species identification and began processing of the specimen. A phone call was placed to the NJ Marine Mammal Stranding Center (MMSC) to determine their interest in taking possession of the carcass. ECSI staff provided MMSC staff with a description of the condition of the turtle, and based on those details, MMSC directed ECSI staff to discard the specimen. Specimen was discarded into the on-site waste debris collection container.

Draw wounds, abnormalities, tag locations on diagram and briefly describe below.
Description of animal:
At the time of observation at 08:40AM, the specimen was determined to be deceased, indicated by the lack of movement and an existing odor of decay. Specimen revealed damage to the dorsal aspects of the head, in the form of an abrasion to the left side of the neck, and missing scales on top of the head (refer to illustration). Damage also included a laceration on the right side of the plastron, in the vicinity of the pectoral and abdominal scutes. External tags were not observed, and an internal PIT tag was not indicated.

3 Salem SGS Incidental Take Report - Sea Turtle Dorsal view of a deceased Kemps ridley sea turtle, as it appeared after retrieval from Salem CWIS intake on 07-01-2021 by Salem Yard crew personnel during routine trash rack cleaning. Some minor damage to the prefrontal scales on the head was observed (07/01/2021).
