OF JUNE 22, 2021, PARTIALLY CLOSED MEETING WITH GLOBAL NUCLEAR FUEL AND U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION REGARDING HIGHER BURNUP ADVANCED BOILING WATER REACTOR FUELS On June 22, 2021, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff held a closed teleconference meeting via Microsoft Teams with representatives from Global Nuclear Fuel (GNF). The purpose of the meeting was for GNF representatives and the NRC staff to discuss plans for using higher burnup (HBU) advanced boiling water reactor (BWR) fuels. The meeting was noticed on June 10, 2021, and the meeting notice is available in the Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) under Accession No. ML21167A349.
This meeting was a follow-up to the March 18, 2021, partially closed meeting (ADAMS Package Accession No. ML21064A404) with GNF on HBU BWR fuels.
During the open session of the meeting, representatives from GNF provided an overview of the GNF plan for risk-informed licensing for increasing the burnup limit for BWR fuels (GNF slides for the open session are publicly available in ADAMS under Accession No. ML21159A207).
There were no questions from members of the public during the open session.
During the closed session of the meeting, the GNF representatives discussed the risk-informed approach, scope of the topical report (TR) and approval strategy, plans for hydrogen pickup model, risk assessments for specific impacted analyses, and addressed the NRC staffs questions pertaining to its planned submittal of its HBU extension TR.
