PUBLIC MEETING ANNOUNCEMENT

Title:

Workshop: SCALE/MELCOR Non-Light-Water Reactor (Non-LWR) Source Term Demonstration Project - High-Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor Date(s) and Time(s):

Location: Teleconference Category: This is an Information Meeting with a Question and Answer Session. The purpose of this meeting is for the NRC staff to meet directly with individuals to discuss regulatory and technical issues. Attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions of the NRC staff or make comments about the issues discussed throughout the meeting; however, the NRC is not actively soliciting comments towards regulatory decisions at this meeting.

Purpose:

The NRC is sponsoring a public workshop on the non-LWR SCALE/MELCOR source term demonstration project. The workshop is part of the agencys efforts to prepare for safety reviews of non-LWR license applications. The workshop is intended to facilitate dialogue on the NRC staffs approach for source term. The workshop will cover the use of SCALE and MELCOR for modeling accidents for high-temperature gas-cooled reactors. The following topics will be covered:

1. An overview of the project and an overview of high-temperature gas-cooled reactors.
2. SCALE methods for predicting core fission product inventory and decay heat as well as sample SCALE results.
3. MELCOR methods for predicting core heat up and fission product release to the environment during an accident as well as sample MELCOR results.
