TheCommission understands theimportance ofthiseffort toenablethedevelopment anddeployment ofadvanced nuclear technologies.

TheNRCis developing apredictable, andappropriately

flexible, framework toenable amoreefficient licensing process. The framework will accommodate various advanced reactor technologies, prioritizing risk-informed andperformance-based licensing approaches toprotect public healthand safety throughout thelife ofafacility.

Asnoted inyourletter, completing this rulemaking onanaccelerated schedule requires substantial efforts andresources.

TheNRCcontinues toengage withandseekinput from numerous stakeholders, including theU.S.Department

ofEnergy, trade
groups, vendors, developers, nongovernmental organizations, membersofthepublic,
Congress, andthe NRC's Advisory Committee onReactor Safeguards onthedevelopment ofthis proposed rule.

The Commission will submit areport toCongress byJuly 14,2021,toprovide adetailed account of theNRC'sprogress toward establishing this regulatory framework foradvanced reactor technologies.
