SUBJECT:

SUMMARY

OF THE MAY 27, 2021, MEETING BETWEEN THE U.S.

NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION STAFF AND THE ELECTRIC POWER RESEARCH INSTITUTE TO DISCUSS NONCONSERVATISM IN BWRVIP-100, REVISION 1-A On May 27, 2021, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff met with representatives from the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). The purpose of the meeting was to discuss nonconservatism in BWRVIP-100, Revision 1-A: Revision 1-A: "BWR Vessel and Internals Project Updated Assessment of the Fracture Toughness of Irradiated Stainless Steel for BWR [Boiling Water Reactors] Core Shrouds. Information related to the meeting, including presentations and the attendees list, can be found in the Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Package Accession No. ML21147A162.

The first part of the meeting was open. EPRI provided information on ongoing work to obtain additional fracture toughness data. The presentations were from the Boiling Water Reactor Vessel and Internals Program (BWRVIP) and the Materials Reliability Program. These presentations can be found in the ADAMS package previously referenced.

The second part of the meeting was closed because of the proprietary information being discussed. A question from the NRC staff was whether EPRI would share the integrity evaluations performed by the BWRVIP. The EPRI representatives noted that the analyses were proprietary but committed to consider sharing the analyses. The only action from the meeting was for EPRI to let the staff know if it would provide the analyses.

During the session the staff asked several information questions.
