OF APRIL 6, 2021, CLOSED MEETING WITH GLOBAL NUCLEAR FUEL AND THE U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION FOR UPDATE ON ARMOR TOPICAL REPORT DATA (EPID L-2019-PMP-0098)
On April 6, 2021, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff held a closed teleconference meeting via Microsoft Teams with representatives from Global Nuclear Fuel (GNF). The purpose of the meeting was for GNF to provide an update on Abrasion Resistant More Oxidation Resistant (ARMOR) Post-Irradiation Exam (PIE) data results from Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) observations. The meeting was noticed on March 18, 2021, and is available in the Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) at Accession No. ML21078A159. This meeting is a follow-up to the March 17, 2021, monthly management TR status meeting with GNF and the NRC.
During the meeting representatives from GNF discussed ORNL ARMOR PIE data results from lead test assemblies (LTAs), including ARMOR performance characteristics, discovery timeline, ARMOR PIE rapid exam update, sampling locations, ORNL unirradiated ARMOR polished condition, and next steps. GNF addressed the NRC staffs questions pertaining to ARMOR test results and future testing activities. GNF plans to conduct additional assessment of current and future post operation ARMOR LTA results and will have additional interaction with the NRC to provide updates.
