[External_Sender] FW: Indian Point Unit 3 - Permanently Defueled Technical Specifications (PDTS) License Amendment Request (LAR)

Date: Thursday, July 30, 2020 2:42:13 PM Attachments: image001.png Hi Rich, This is to confirm that the Unit 3 Boral Surveillance Program which is also described in the Appendix A (License Renewal) of the Unit 3 UFSAR, will be retained in the proposed Appendix A to the Unit 3 Defueled Safety Analysis Report (DSAR).

The Unit 3 Boral Surveillance program relies on representative coupon samples mounted in surveillance assemblies located in the spent fuel pool. Surveillance assemblies are removed from the spent fuel pool on a prescribed schedule and the physical and chemical properties are measured.

From this data, the performance, stability, and integrity of the Boral in the storage cells are monitored and assessed without disrupting the integrity of the storage system.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions.

Hi Mahvash, As discussed, I was not able to find any information in the subject LAR regarding the IP3 Boral surveillance program; specifically, I would like to confirm that the IP3 Boral material in the spent fuel pool will continue to be monitored as long as there is fuel in the spent fuel pool. While I understand there may not be any technical specifications associated with the existing Boral program which would be proposed for change as part of the PDTS LAR, for completeness in our review, I would like to verify that the existing Boral Surveillance Program, as described in Entergys response to Generic Letter 2016-01 (ADAMS Accession Nos. ML16314E261, ML16314E266, and ML18151A858) remain applicable to ensure continued performance of Boral as a neutron absorbing material in the spent fuel pool.

Can you verify the existing program is not being proposed for change in the IP3 PDTS LAR and that the inspection frequency and acceptance criteria remain in place until such time as there is no longer fuel in the unit 3 spent fuel pool?
