[External_Sender] Holtec/Palisades Date:
Friday, March 05, 2021 12:31:47 PM To Whom, My husband and I live on the shore of lake Michigan 9.8 miles south of the Palisades plant. We are aware of many concerns about Palisades, especially its position on the shoreline.
We oppose Holtec doing the decommissioning for several reasons: 1). Hotecs past history of cost overruns; i2) its shortcuts to safety at the expense of nearby homes and the environment, and 3) its failure to complete a project on time.
Of special concern to us is the nature of the geology under the Palisades plant. Its almost all sand meaning that any accidental spills or radioactive contaminants could easily permeate the sandy ground and enter Lake Michigan posing serious risks to health and safe drinking water. Further, the location of the plant has been a target for derechos coming across Lake Michigan with 60-100 mile an hour straight line winds. This has happened twice in the last 8 years. Debris from decommissioning could easily be swept into the air further endangering workers, nearby homes, cars and the gas plant across I-196.
In short, we do not trust Holtecs corporate philosophy or its methods of operation. We look forward to the day Palisades shuts down, but we dont want Holtec moving in.
We see Lake Michigan as a precious gift of water and recreation not only for people in SW Michigan but also for 40 million people across the upper Midwest.
Sincerely, Barbara and Julius Pellegrini 4022 Evergreen Lane Hagar Township Benton Harbor, MI 49022
