Marine Turtle Removal Monthly Summary October 2020

Attached, please find the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for October 2020.
This month we captured 16 Caretta caretta, 24 Chelonia mydas, and one Lepidochelys kempii in the intake canal of the St. Lucie power plant on Hutchinson Island. One turtle was sent for rehabilitation (non-causal) and there were no mortalities during the month of October. As with all sea turtle strandings at the Saint Lucie Plant, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) was consulted and a stranding form was filed with the state through the Sea Turtle Stranding and Salvage Network.
One turtle was sent to a rehabilitation facility for non-causal injuries this month. On October 4th, a juvenile Kemp's ridley was recovered with extensive healing injuries from an apparent old boat strike. This turtle had partially healed lacerations on its head and carapace. It also had impact wounds in its carapace. Gumbo Limbo Nature Center biologists picked up and transported the turtle for rehab. Because these injuries were unrelated to power plant activity they were classified as non-causal.
The primary 5-inch barrier net encountered moderate amounts of algae in October.
Altogether, the primary barrier net has performed as designed and no turtles have been observed beyond the 5inch net. The tag numbers and morphometric data for all turtles captured during the month have been included with this report (see attachments/addendums). Also included is a spreadsheet for all captures, mortalities, injuries, and causal events delineated by species and by month for 2020. In addition, this spreadsheet tracks fresh scrapes incurred on captured turtles for the current month, as well as the entire year.

NOTES
- 1. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 5/31/12, 4/27/13, 11/5/13, 1/21/14, 7/3/14, 6/17/15, 6/22/18, 9/14/19, and 10/2/20. Old healed boat strike to posterior carapace. Kyphotic carapace.
- 2. REHAB (NON-CAUSAL). Stranding# AMM201004-01. Juvenile Kemp's ridley with extensive healing injuries, likely from a boat strike. Deep healing cut across left side of face and neck. Deep cuts also in carapace. Healing cut and impact wounds in left posterior carapace that extend into the plastron.
Gumbo Limbo Nature Center picked up and transported the turtle for rehab.
- 3. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 3/19/08, 6/28/13, 5/25/14, 2/12/16, 6/1/17, 9/19/17, 10/16/17, 1/21/18, 4/17/19, 2/17/20, and 10/5/20.
- 4. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 10/9/11, 1/8/12, 2/5/12, 5/24/12, 7/5/12, 4/3/13, 4/20/13, 8/31/13, and 10/5/20. New Inconel tag inserted on this capture event.
- 5. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 4/21/18, 12/17/18, 4/3/19, 9/13/19, 9/26/19, 2/20/20, 8/12/20, and 10/6/20.
- 6. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 7/25/11, 10/21/15, 12/28/15, 3/8/16, 2/2/17, 4/10/18, 4/13/19, and 10/6/20. New Inconel tags inserted.
