ACCEPTANCE LETTER FOR THE REVIEW OF GE-HITACHI LICENSING TOPICAL REPORT NEDC-33922P, REVISION 0, BWRX-300 CONTAINMENT EVALUATION METHOD (DOCKET NO. 99900003)
Dear Ms. Catts:
By letter dated September 25, 2020, GE-Hitachi Nuclear Energy Americas, LLC (GEH) submitted Licensing Topical Report (LTR) NEDC-33922P, Revision 0, BWRX-300 Containment Evaluation Method (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System Accession No. ML20269A469), to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff for review. In that letter, GEH requested the NRC staff to review and approve the analysis method used for the BWRX-300 containment thermal hydraulics performance. GEH further requested that the NRC staff review this information, determine its acceptability for use, and issue a final safety evaluation no later than June 25, 2021.
The purpose of this letter is to inform you that the NRC staff evaluated the submitted LTR on Containment Evaluation Method Revision 0 and determined that it provides sufficient technical information for the NRC staff to conduct a detailed technical review. If the NRC staff needs additional information to complete its review, we will issue formal requests for additional information by separate correspondence.
As you are aware, the NRC staff has requested GEH to provide the TRACG and GOTHIC input decks and executable files to recreate (for confirmatory purposes) the information summarized in NEDC-33922. This confirmatory approach will enable the NRC staff to streamline its review and has been discussed with George Wadkins of your staff. Once the requested information is received and the NRC staff has factored in the efficiencies it can achieve, then we can provide a review schedule and estimated level of effort to complete the review of this LTR. The NRC staffs confirmatory work will commence upon receipt of the requested information. As such, please be advised that our ability to deliver a final safety evaluation by the requested date of no later than June 25, 2021, depends upon when we receive the requested TRACG and GOTHIC input decks and executable files.
