Dear Ms. Bawden:
Thank you for providing the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) with the opportunity to review and comment on the U.S. Government Accountability Office's (GAO) draft report GAO 28, "URANIUM MANAGEMENT: Actions to Mitigate Risks to Domestic Supply Chain Could Be Better Planned and Coordinated." The NRC has reviewed the draft report and offers two comments for consideration.
Staff Comment:
- 1. Page 13, Footnote 25 - The NRC staff suggests that the following sentences NRC has implemented one recommendation, while the second has not yet been implemented.
DOE has implemented both recommendations., be replaced with the following: NRC and DOE have implemented both recommendations., as reflected on GAOs Web page for status of GAO-16-713 at: https://www.gao.gov/products/GAO-16-713.
- 2. Pages 14 The NRC staff recommends that the sentence beginning at the end of page 14 should be modified to read, ConverDyn reported that a re-start would take about 24 to 30 months, with 18 to 24 months for NRC-required and Honeywell-mandated worker retraining.
If you have any questions regarding this response, please contact John Jolicoeur. Mr. Jolicoeur can be reached by telephone at (301) 415-1642 or email at John.Jolicoeur@nrc.gov.
Sincerely, Signed by Doane, Margaret on 11/03/20 Margaret M. Doane Executive Director for Operations
