[External_Sender] Docket ID NRC-2018-0052 Draft Environmental Impact Statement Comment

Dear NRC Staff,

The following comments were transcribed from the video recording of the Peoples Hearing held by the Nuclear Issues Study Group on Wednesday, September 16, 2020 (Available online: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CfCBsXCQyOU). These written comments are being submitted with the consent of the commenters. The transcription was made possible by the work of the Nuclear Issues Study Group volunteers.

BRIDGET LLANES Thank you so much for having me. I don't want to be anti climactic, and I thought that that video that I was just watching was really powerful. And I'm showing up right at the very end of everything, but yes I will speak anyway. I will be brief. Again, thank you for having me at this Peoples Hearing. It's been really powerful just to be able to see the presentation and learn a lot more about what's happening in southeastern New Mexico.

I am grateful to be here on the land of Tiwa speaking peoples and appreciate this time for public comment which I feel like is essential to hold time for gathering community input for any process that impacts the public. My name is Bridget Llanes with the community organization Sunflowers for Change, and I'm speaking here today as someone born and raised in Hobbs, New Mexico. I oppose the siting of a high-level radioactive waste storage facility in southeastern New Mexico. Ample time for public comment is needed, and there's no need to rush this process during the pandemic.

People should be given time to have a face-to-face meeting with Holtec about the siting of this facility which can only be done safely after the pandemic. I'm opposed to the siting of this radioactive waste dump near rural and Hispanic communities, some of which are my family members, and add that no communities should ever be exposed to possible harm caused from siting toxic waste facilities. When I shared, when I shared what I knew about the Holtec waste dump with my family in southeastern New Mexico, none of them were aware of the potential siting of this facility in their backyard. And there is a problem with that. So, there needs to be a lot more effort spent outreaching the community to really get the input that is needed on the siting of this facility. Nuclear waste is toxic and dangerous for all life on this earth despite how safe environmental impact statements report. I remember the WIPP spill in 2014 or the WIPP leak and I dont want that to happen againa leak would be devastating for the agricultural economies and health of our communities. Thank you so much again for the time and

the consideration that you're giving me. Yeah, and I hope that we will cease using nuclear power. Go with the directive of using wind and sun which we have so much of, and that you will rule against Holtecs siting of a nuclear waste dump in southeastern New Mexico. Thank you.
