I am writing to protest the placement of this nuclear waste storage site and the transportation routes through areas of Texas that include fragile aquifers that provide clean drinking water for millions of citizens. Not only is this area known to have numerous earthquakes due to fracking and mining, but the failure of the containers would release catastrophic amounts of hazardous radioactive directly into the surface environment, into water supplies, and then bioconcentrate up the food chain and harm people for generations.
We have already seen the failure of the NRC to demonstrate the ability to clean up the significant amount of radioactive materials that have leaked from the Hanford site into the air and the Columbia River as well as from Fukushima. We do not need to subject the citizens of Texas and New Mexico to the risks of nuclear waste spills when the procedures and processes have not been proven to be safe.
I urge you to delay this project and extend the review period until a safer alternative can be found.
