The Albuquerque Teachers Federation (ATF) represents over 6,800 licensed educators in Albuquerque Public Schools. Our educators teach over 80,000 students. Our work is about building the future of New Mexico and the world as we educate the young people who will inherit that future. It is for this reason that we oppose the transferal of nuclear waste from other parts of the United States to our Land of Enchantment.

The proposed deposit of spent nuclear fuel waste in our state by Holtec endangers the precious drinking water and fragile ecosystem upon which life in our desert state depends. It is our duty to be careful stewards of the land so that our students and our own children enjoy health and the natural beauty our state is known for.

Furthermore, the proposal of dumping this harmful waste in New Mexico echoes the history of exploitation and colonization the majority of our people have faced.

This proposal magnifies the present inequities in our state and across our country as this waste facility is being pushed on one of the poorest states in the union, a state whose majority population is comprised of people of color.

Finally, the fact that this waste facility would be run by Holtec, a private corporation, suggests a lack of proper oversight from the federal government who should bear the ultimate responsibility for securing this waste safely.

ATF stands in firm opposition to this waste site proposal to protect our students, staff, and communities now and in the future.
