RE: Hearing for Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) concerning Interim Nuclear Waste Storage Facilities in New Mexico Accumulating highly radioactive nuclear waste must be kept in pools for five years or more until cooled and decayed enough for dry storage. Then it can be transferred to on-site dry hardened cask storage. Although most sites have dry storage containers, the public call is for Hardened On-Site Storage which is more protective than containers alone. Some pools are already beyond capacity. Instead of shipping this extremely dangerous substance from all the nuclear power plants across the country to interim storage facilities in New Mexico, a safer, more practical and far less expensive solution exits. That is Hardened Onsite Storage.

Such measures will lower the risk of a release of radioactivity while we await permanent dry cask storage at current nuclear facilities.

Hardened On-Site Storage (HOSS) eliminates the hazards posed by transporting nuclear waste to offsite storage facilities, especially 'interim' storage sites in other parts of the country. All 'interim' storage sites are illegal.
