[External_Sender] Please do not approve Holtec permit in New Mexico

Dear Nuclear Regulatory Commission Holtec comments,

Locally generated nuclear waste already has to cross the entire state to be stored at the WIPP, and a majority of New Mexicans oppose increasing the amount of radioactive waste being transported and stored in our state. This proposed project has shown little regard for the safety and welfare of the communities it has the potential to impact; the lack of real-time, controlled monitoring systems and long-term solutions for storage and containment in the event of a possible leak is beyond alarming.

New Mexico is not looking to be the American version of Chernobyl, and by implementing half-baked measures to transport, house, and contain highly irradiated spent fuel materials would be quite literally opening Pandora's box. New Mexico has already had it's fair share of unmitigated radioactive damage, just ask the families of the Tularosa Basin Downwinders who have yet to be compensated for the dangers to which they were unknowingly exposed. We are not looking for a repeat of this travesty.

I object to the approval of the Holtec Consolidated Interim Storage site near Carlsbad, NM. It would be safer to reduce transportation of highly radioactive used reactor fuel by leaving it at the site of generation until a permanent repository exists. ?

-- The proposed site is near a highway presenting a terrorism risk.

--?The plan does not adequately address radiation risk to workers. ?

--?There should be real-time monitoring for leakage.

--?The lack of consideration of Hardened On-Site Storage at the reactor site as an alternative is a glaring problem. ?

--?The lack of an on-site plan to deal with leakage is extremely concerning.

Thank you for your consideration Sincerely, Dominique Nunez 1328 Cherokee Rd NW Albuquerque, NM 87107 domi013@gmail.com (505) 730-9019 This message was sent by KnowWho, as a service provider, on behalf of an individual associated with Sierra Club Rio Grande Chapter.
