[External_Sender] Please do not approve Holtec permit in New Mexico
Dear Nuclear Regulatory Commission Holtec comments,
The casks of highly radioactive waste are only designed to last up to 120 years, but the waste must thermally cool for 200 years before being placed underground in a permanent repository. The likely re-packaging of the waste will be expensive and risky.
The total radioactivity load in the region has not been considered. There are many other businesses near the proposed site that create radioactive emissions, including the natural radioactivity released during very extensive oil and gas operations in the Permian Basin.
I object to the approval of the Holtec Consolidated Interim Storage site near Carlsbad, NM. It would be safer to reduce transportation of highly radioactive used reactor fuel by leaving it at the site of generation until a permanent repository exists. ?
-- The proposed site is near a highway presenting a terrorism risk.
--?The plan does not adequately address radiation risk to workers. ?
--?There should be real-time monitoring for leakage.
--?The lack of consideration of Hardened On-Site Storage at the reactor site as an alternative is a glaring problem. ?
--?The lack of an on-site plan to deal with leakage is extremely concerning.
Thank you for your consideration Sincerely, Allison Gentile 13104 Chitalpa Pl NE Albuquerque, NM 87111 forallie@earthlink.net (505) 299-6501 This message was sent by KnowWho, as a service provider, on behalf of an individual associated with Sierra Club Rio Grande Chapter.
