Marine Turtle Removal Monthly Summary August 2020

Dear Meghan,

Attached, please find the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for August 2020. This month we captured 11 Caretta caretta and 13 Chelonia mydas in the intake canal of the St.

Lucie power plant on Hutchinson Island. One turtle was sent for rehabilitation (non-causal) and there were no mortalities during the month of August. As with all sea turtle strandings at the Saint Lucie Plant, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) was consulted and a stranding form was filed with the state through the Sea Turtle Stranding and Salvage Network.

One turtle was sent to a rehabilitation facility for non-causal injuries this month. On August 22nd, a subadult loggerhead was recovered from the tangle nets that was heavily entangled in monofilament line. The fishing line was tangled around all four flippers and was also coming out of its mouth. The FWC stranding coordinator picked up and transported this turtle to the Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach for rehab. Because the injury was unrelated to power plant activity it was classified as non-causal.

The primary 5-inch barrier net encountered moderate-to-severe amounts of algae in August.

This was partly due to Tropical Storm Isaias as it moved up the east coast of Florida in the beginning of the month. In response, Underwater Engineering Services, Inc. (UESI) inspected the primary barrier net and removed accumulated algae and debris as needed. Furthermore, IRG biologists performed around-the-clock monitoring of the intake canal and barrier net system either as warranted by sufficiently high debris intrusion levels or whenever directed by FPL oversight personnel. Lastly, UESI performed the quarterly net inspections on the first two barrier nets (the 5-inch and 8-inch A-1-A) as well as the semiannual inspection of the UIDS net; one hole was found in the 5-inch barrier net and promptly repaired. Moreover, the primary barrier net has performed as designed and no turtles have been observed beyond the 5inch net.

The tag numbers and morphometric data for all turtles captured during the month have been included with this report (see attachments/addendums). Also included is a spreadsheet for all captures, mortalities, injuries, and causal events delineated by species and by month for 2020.

In addition, this spreadsheet tracks fresh scrapes incurred on captured turtles for the current month, as well as the entire year.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Sincerely, Steve Steve Weege Sr. Environmental Specialist Inwater Research Group, Inc.
