[External_Sender] NRC-2016-0231 Interim Nuclear Waste Storage I read about this plan to create interim storage sites in New Mexico and Texas to store nuclear waste and think this is a very bad idea. Nuclear power has over and over again shown itself to be an horribly expensive mistake with the problem of how to deal with the lethal waste it produces one of the most intractable--it has no effective solution. Why are we risking so much catastrophe for this technology that has never produced the hoped-for positive outcomes projected? Haven't we learned the folly of this dangerous pursuit of a rosy nuclear future in the terrible accidents that accompany the use of it?
We are sweeping the truth under a rug. We simply don't know how to manage this technology. But who pays the cost of the mistakes and accidents?
Nuclear stored waste, hazardous far into the future and requiring ongoing rigorous control systems and monitoring to maintain, inevitably must result in a failure in these systems at some point. Why do we think it won't happen? Have we been able to neutralize the hazards of the waste? Are we betting that we will? Who wants to make that bet? Is shipping and storage of the waste safe?
Has it become cost effective? We cannot say yes now, so why pretend that all will go well and that we will figure out how to make dealing with this radioactive waste safe and efficient someday?
This year has amply proven that we cannot easily predict what the future might bring in terms of unexpected and destabilizing outcomes that we are unprepared to deal with. Our society is in deep disarray, the consequences and effects on storing radioactive waste cannot be good.
Let's not go down this path, we aren't prepared for it.
An interim storage site for such a serious and lethal problem is simply a absurd pretense that we can solve this issue by burying it and washing our hands of the ongoing issue.
Thank you for listening to my urgent plea to not succumb to the idea of convenience now that we have no way to pay for.
