SUBJECT:

YEAR 2000 SOFTWARE ISSUES - DAVIS-BESSE NUCLEAR POWER STATION, UNIT N0. 1 (TAC NO. MA1965)

Dear Mr. Wood:

By letter dated'May 22, 1998, you requested that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff determine the impact of Year 2000 (Y2K) phenomena on NRC-supplied software used at the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station, Unit No.1. The specific _ codes (SADDE, Version 1.0; SADDE MOD 2, Version 1.0; I

VARSKIN, Version 1.0; and VARSKIN M002, Version 1.0) are used at Davis-Besse

-to calculate the radiation dose rate of site personnel.

NRC has developed, often with contractor support, many computer codes for industry use.

These codes are normally offered to industry with the understanding that it is each licensee's responsibility to validate the software for the particular application.

Though NRC is currently targeting some codes for updates, including resolution of any Y2K issues, current resource limitations do not allow the staff to project when these updates will be ready for use by licensees.

In addition, when the updated codes are j

released, validation will still be each licensee's responsibility.

'For these reasons, the staff can not assess the impact of Y2K issues on NRC-supplied computer codes.

However, you are encouraged to report to NRC any Y2K concerns that you identify so that, as resources and priorities allow, the issues can be addressed.

Please contact me if you have any questions regarding this matter.

I can be 1 reached at'(301) 415-1390.
