QUESTIONS REGARDING EXEMPTION REQUEST-EMERGENCY LIGHTING By letter dated October 6,1997 Baltimore Gas and Electric Company, the licensee for Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant, submitted an exemption request to the NRC concoming certain requirements of 10 CFR Part 50, Appendix R. Section lil.J. Emergency Lightirsi;.

Pacifically, the licensee requested an exemption from the requirement to have 6-hour battery cower lighting for exterior access and egress routes and to credit the neurity lighting powered by the security diesel for exterior areas. The licensee also requesteo' an exemption to use portable lighting in

' lieu of installed 8-hour battery powered lighting in higii radiatim areas and inside of electrical cabinets. Duifng a telephone conference call on June 4,1998, the staff discussed the details of the request with the !icensee. The following information is required to complete the review of the exemption request.

1. Describe the locStion of the portable lights and type of portable lights that will be used by the operators in the high radiation areas and inside of the electrical cabinets.
2. Provide a physical description of the high radiation areas including access / egress route lighting and location and description of safe shutdown activities within the high radiation areas.
3. Describe any time critical activities inside of the high radiation areas and the electrical cabinets and any affect that using portable lighting may have on time critical activities.
4. Describe the reason that an exemption is requested for the high radiation areas.
