Subject:

Byron Station NRC ILT Examination and Improved Technical Specifications

Reference:

Telephone Communication between Melvyn Leach (RIII) and Steve Pettinger (Byron Station) on June 5,1998 Byron Station has trained the current Initial License Class on the Improved Technical Specifications (ITS). This decision was made during 1997, with the understanding ITS would be implemented in July 1998. Several delays have pushed back the implementation date until January 1999.

Byron Station is currently developing the Initial License Examination for the current class. As discussed in the referenced telecom, it is our intent to construct this examination to test ITS instead of Current Technical Specifications (CTS).

This will minimize the impact on the students and on examination development.

Following the NRC Examination, we plan to train and evaluate the candidates on CTSJ With this in mind, Byron Station requests that the NRC hold the Licenses of the candidates who pass the NRC examination until either ITS are implemented or the individuals have completed the training and evaluation on CTS. (It is anticipated that the training and evaluation will be completed prior to the Licenses being processed.) We will notify you when the candidates have satisfactorily completed the CTS training.
