Docket No. 50-344

Subject:

MEDIA INTEREST IN RADIOACTIVE CONTAMINATION INCIDENTS AT TROJAN The Portland, Oregon, area news media are working on a story concerning 26 aeparate and unrelated incidents of radioactive contamination of workers at thc Trojan Nuclear Plant.

The source of the story is uncertain, but it may have emanated from the Governor's office. Press ccverage is expected Monday night and Tuesday morning.

On Thursday, September 17, a worker was sprayed with contaminated water while doing maintenance on a valve packing within the boron injection system.

An official of the Oregon Department of Energy was in the plant at the time of the incident and reported it to the Director of the Energy Department. The worker contamination was described by the li-censee as being very low (2000 dpm maximum).

Normal decontamination procedures were used successfully.

On Friday afternoon, Director of the Oregon Department of Energy telephoned PGE asking what plans the company has for handling incidents p

of this sort. A letter of admonition was read to PGE officials at j

the Trojan site after the close of business Friday.

.6 The licensee's Public Relations Director received telephone inquiries A

from the news media on Sunday about the incident. A reporter from a C

Portland newspaper indicated that the Governor had been concerned about d

the number of contamination incidents at Trojan and had caused the news to be leaked to the press. The company did not issue a press release, nor was the incident reportable to the NRC.

l Twenty-six personnel contamination incidents have occurred since the plant went into operation late in 1975. Company representatives have stated that all but one were of a much lower level than the September 17 incident.
