LOSS AND RECOVERY OF AN SNM SHIPPING CONTAINER On January 29, 1976, IE:II (Atlanta) was informed that a 6-L shipping Container had fallen from a truck and had been recovered in sa undamaged condition.

There was 4.99 kgs. U-235 metal in the container..

The rollup door on a Smith Transport Company Truck relear,ed in route and about 2:30 a.m.,

January 29, 1976, the shipping contair.er fell onto the highway East of Buffalo, New York. The truck driver later became aware of the loss and notified the Smith Transport Terminal manager at Buffalo.

New York State Patrol and U. S. Nuclear were notified by the Transport Company.

The State Patrol found the container at 4:00 a.m., January 29, 1976. The

container was not damaged, the seal was intact and a survey indicated no y

contamination.

The container was released to the Smith Transport Company 7

by the State Patrol after consultation with U. S. Nuclear, Inc. and ERDA.

There has been no press release by NRC or U. S. Nuclear.

The Department of Transportation (DOT) and the State of New York have been notified.

OA U. S. Nuclear, Inc. notified IE:II at 4:00 a.m., and Oak Ridge Operations Office at 8:00 a.m., January 29, 1976.
