Subject:
PRESS INQUIRIES RELATED TO IDENTIFIED CABLE DEFECTS IN THE ELECTRICAL SAFETY RELATED SYSTEMS Region III (Chicago) has received numerous telephone inquiries concerning a news article which appeared in the Cleveland, Ohio " Plain Dealer." newspaper.
i This article, which appeared in today's (March 18, 1976) edition, states that approximately 1,400 problems have been identified in safety related cables at the Davis-Besse Unit 1 facility.
Region III personnel informed each of the callers that the 1,400 number represents the total of both the significant and insignificant problems that the licensee, Toledo Edison Company, has found during the course of their reinspection of safety related cables. The callers, who were principally news personnel, were informed that the original NRC inspection that identified the safety related cable deficiencies was per-formed in May 1975 and that our subsequent inspections have confirmed that the licensee was not only correcting the problems, but was also con-I ducting a reinspection which would not be completed for several more weeks.
NRC personnel will continue to perform followup inspections of the electrical' problems.
No further action beyond the previously scheduled insepetions and responding to the. inquirers is planned.
This PN was originated by Region III because numerous phone calls from news media were received the morning of March 18, 1976.
