PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE -PNO-76-06 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY 1.atice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by OIE staff as of 3:15 P.M. on date of this notification. IT SHOULD BE SPECIFICALLY NOTED THAT THIS NOTIFICATION MAY CONTAIN INFORMATION THAT LATER FAY BE DETERMINED TO BE INACCURATE OR INCONSISTENT. AN OFFICE OF INSPECTION AND ENFORCEMENT NOTIFICATION OF AN INCIDENT OR OCCURRENCE (BLUE SHEET) SUBSEQUENTLY WILL BE ISSUED IF WARRANTED.

UNPLANNED OUTAGE At 4:30 a.m. on January 13, 1976 a short developed in one of four reactor '

coolant pump motor stators and the reactor tripped from eighty percent

power.

No spare pump is available at th. facility. Also the cucteut uute in limited to four pump operation by Technical Specifications, since three pump operation was not analyzed in the core safety analysis. (}

Duration of the outage is expected to be either three or four weeks.

The licensee is proceeding with two plans to return to operation. The d

p<y first plan involves borrowing a pump motor from Consolidated Company of C2-New York (Indian Point 1). The motor is currently being removed from Indian Point 1. Removal, shipment and installation is expected to take .

The second plan involves obtaining authorization from NRR to operate with three pumps. A revised core safety analysis is currently being prepared. Preparation, submittal, and approval of this analysis are expected to take two weeks from date of shutdown. This plan will be adopted for plant operation if problems develop in utilizing the Indian Point 1 motor.

Media interest is expected because of the extended outage. The State of Massachusetts has been informed. A press release is being issued by the licensee.
