January 27, 1977 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF SAFEGUARDS EVENT-PNS-77-01 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE national security or public interest significance.

The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff as of this date.

Subject:

BOMB THREAT A telephonic bomb threat was received by the South Carolina Electric and Gas Company (SCE&G) Safety & First Aid office at about 1410 hrs.

(2:10 p.m.), Wednesday, January 26, 1977. The male caller stated that a bomb would go off in about one hour.

The presence of high background noise suggested that the call may have originated on site.

The SCE&G Site Manager evaluated it as a crank call and thus did not evacuate the site or alert the work force. All supervisors were notified and limited searches made of areas near vital equipment such as the reactor vessel, steam generators, warehouse, etc.~

No bomb was found and no explosions occurred.

Region II (Atlanta) was telephonically notified by SCE&G at 1430 hrs.,

FBI, State Highway Patrol, and local law enforce-

ment agencies were notified and arrived on site by 1500 hrs. The IAT was notified. No press release is planned.
