Subject:
UNEXPLAINED FIREARMS DISCHARGE NEAR SITE At about 0135 EST on February 6, 1977, a U. S. Nuclear security guard heard a single gunshot and observed a flash of light believed to be a muzzle flash. The sound and flash was from offsite but near the boundary.

pistol shots in the direction of the observed light flash. He also l
called for help on his "walkie talkie" radio. Within two minutes after being called by other NFS guards, two county sheriff's patrol cars ar-f rived at the scene. Within about four minutes of being called, patrol

cars arrived from the city of Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

A search of the area disclosed no evidence of the origin or motivation 1

for the offsite firearms discharge. The moon was full and the weather was clear.
It has been reported that poaching deer hunters have been active in this area.
Region II dispatched an inspector to the site to follow developments.
Of He arrived on site in the late afternoon of February 6, 1977. The FBI

A press release is not planned.
Region II was notified of the event by telephone from the licensee I
about 1215 EST on February 6, 1977.
