SUBJECT:

VEHICLE ENTRANCE-SEARCH, UNCOVERED ALLEDGED STOLEN WEAPON IN TRI-STATE MOTOR TRANSIT INC. VEHICLE l At approximately 10:15 a.m. , May 18,1978, during a routine search of TRI-State Motor Transit Inc. tractor trailer at the entry point leading to Three Mile Island Nuclear site, one .45 caliber hand gun and one ammo clip containing six rounds of .45 caliber ammunition (not inserted in weapon) was found under a pillow in the tractor sleeping compartment.

The Tri-State. truck was entering the TMI site to pick up a radwaste '

shipment. The driver and co-driver were detained because of their attempt to bring an unauthorized weapon on site and were remanded to the custody of the Pennsylvania State Police. The hand gun and ammo a clip were turned over to the State Police. A routine check of the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) by the State Police revealed that the hand gun was classified as " stolen." Since the co-driver claimed ownership of the handgun, the State Police released the driver j and arrested the co-driver.

Media interest is expected because of local interest in incidents that p occur at this facility. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has been C informed. A press release is not planned by the licensee nor NRC. g The IAT was notified.

NRC, Region I, (Philadelphia) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from an inspector on site at 11:40 a.m. , May 18,1978.
