- national security or public interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff as of this date.
SUBJECT:
ANTINUCLEAR DEMONSTRATION SCHEDULE FOR THE MAYDAY WEEKEND l
'According to media accounts and other information received by the NRC, l
there may be.antinuclear demonstrations at the Fort St. Vrain HTGR in l
' Colorado,- and the Barnwell Nuclear Fuel Plant in South Carolina during.

. the Mayday Weekend (April'29-May 1, 1978).
The' fort'St. Vrain' demonstration is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on May 1, and will consist of about 150 persons.
The protestors intend to plant spiderwort flowers adjacent to the site which will serve to " monitor radiation." -(The spiderwort flowers reputedly will show " genetic mutation" within two weeks if exposed to " dangerous radioactivity.")
The= licensee has met with demonstration leaders to discuss the ground rules for tSe demonstration, has provided an area for the protestors, and has taken security precautions which include coordination with l
appropriate law enforcement agencies.
No violence ~is expected.

- The Barnwell demonstration may consist of marches to the facility on l
both-April 30 and May 1 by an estimated 1000 - 1200. demonstrators.
- L Protest organizers have met with Barnwell and local law enforcement g/
officials to discuss' the demonstration'and to advise that unspecified
- acts of nonviolent civil disobedience will take place at the end of the May 1 demonstration.
The protestors are aware that such acts could result in arrests.. Demonstration leaders have emphasized the g-

-nonviolent aspects of this protest.
