Dear Congressman Wolf:
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is pleased to respond to your request for information on the agency's participation in Federal telecommuting, or flexiplace, initiatives.
The NRC has had a program in place since 1994 that allows its employees to work at their homes in cases of medical or personal hardship, as well as in certain short-term business exigency situations. Under this program, between 40 and 60 employees per yea Nye been able to work from their homes for periods of up to six months in cases of illness, injury, matemity conditions, care for a newbom child, nr care for a family member who is ill. Feedback from managers, supervisors, and participating employees has been extremely positive.
Additionally, the NRC has recently begun putting in place a telecommuting program that will allow up to 50 Agency employees to work at home or at an offsite location for up to two days per week. Participants will be provided all equipment needed to do their jobs, including telephones and computers. Should this program prove to be a success, as we hope it will, consideration will be given to expanding to telecommuting center-based arrangements.
Through these programs, as well as other family-friendly programs, the NRC has continued to show its commitment to improving the quality of life for its employees and their families. I
