DISCOVERY OF LUMINDUS MARKERS IN A CITY PARK l
About 4:00 p.m., January 4, the Region II (Atlanta) Public Affairs l
Officer received a call from a Norfolk, VA television reporter inquiring about the hazard associated with two U. S. Radium Corporation discs found in Northside City Park by children digging for bottles on December 26, 1
1977.
The reporter stated that State of Virginia and Norfolk officials f
i had about four acres of the park land fill area roped off and had i
subsequently located several more luminous discs.

from Virginia officials that some, but not all, of the markers exhibited i
a radium spectrum and appeared to be of the type that were removed from

'me bulkheads and passageways on WWII naval vessels.

A Region II inspector will take some of the discs that do not cont'ain radium to Norfolk Naval Shipyard today for further analysis.
l State and local officials are continuing to survey and remove luminous n
materials from the park.
NRC jurisdiction at this point is not clear.
