The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation
_and is basically all that is known by IE staff as of this date.

Dulles Airport
SUBJECT:
TRANSPORTATION OCCURRENCE A shipment of 15 curies of krypton 85 in a metal gas cylinder arrived at Dulles Airport with visible damage to the outer wooden shipping container.
The shipment originated from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (a DOE prime contractor) and wes consigned to Bangkok, Thailand.
The shipment was moved to an isolated area.
The State of Virginia and a Fort Belvoir team responded when notified by the shipping agent at Dulles Airport.
The State reported that* damage was limited to the outer container and there was no evidence of krypton gas leakage.
The shipment was to be March 16 it was in Knoxville awaiting, returned to ORNL.As of 8:00 a.m.,
3 pickup.

Initially, media interest was not anticipated but on March 15 DOE-Dak
/J Ridge learned that a story from the Boston Globe was being carried by

the wire services.
A news item also appeared in the Washington Post on 6
March 16.
A news release by NRC is not planned.

Region II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the shipping agent, Dulles Airport at 2:00 p.m. on March 13.
This infortnation is current as of 8:00 a.m. on March 16.
