This letter is in response to your February 26,1998, letter to Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson, Chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Your letter expressed the concerns of the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) pertaining to devices containing radioactive 1
material inadvertently entering the steel recycling stream. Also, your letter indicates that AISC supports the statements and concems expressed by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) and Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA) during the January 21,1998, NRC briefing.
The NRC appreciates your letter and the concems of AISC.
The Commission is currently reviewing the NRC staffs proposal to improve NRC's control over, and licensees' accountability for licensed devices, and information provided during the January 21,1998, briefing, including testimony by the AISI and SMA. The staff expects that it will soon receive direction from the Commission on how to address control and accountability of licensed devices. The staff then will implement the actions specified by the Commission.
