_ Revision 1: 060398 l OPERATING PROCEDURE NO. 211 NUCLEAR REACTOR LABORATORY Ford Nuclear Reactor Phoenix Memorial Laboratory The University of Michigan Ann Arbor, Michigan

1. TITLE OPERATING THE HOT DEMINERALIZED SYSTEM (HOT DD l 2. PURPOSE The purpose of this procedure is to provide a means to ensure the purity of the primary coolant by removal of impurities in the form of minerals, dissolved solids, and corrosion products.
3. EOUIPMENT COVERED The hot DI pumps, demineralized columns, filters, as well as valves and piping required to circulate pool water through the hot DI system.
4. RESPONSIBILITIES 4.1 Shift Supervisor The Shift Supervisor will be a licensed senior reactor operator. S/he will supervise and authorize all activities related to the performance of this procedure.

4.2 Shift Operator The Shift Operator will be a licensed senior reactor operator, a licensed reactor operator, or a person qualified for on-shift duties. The Shift Operator will assist in the performance of this procedure under the supervision of the Shift Supervisor.

5. PROCEDURE 5.1 Console operator review Operating Procedure 211.

5.2 Normal pool water conductivity is maintained between 1.5 mho and 2.5 mho.

Demineralized column "A" ("B") is placed on line when conductivity is 22.5 mho.

When the conductivity of the pool water is 51.5 mho, the column that is on line is bypassed.

5..' PLACING A HOT DEMINERALIZED ON LINE.

5.2.1 When pool water conductivity is 22.5 pmho, check the Hot DI Utilization Input record. posted in the control room. to determine which column is to be placed on line.
