Subject:

REPORT OF A STATIC ELIMINATOR BAR CONTAINING A 39 MILLICURIE POLONIUM-210 SOURCE INVOLVED IN A FIRE RIII (Chicago) was notified via telephone on March 27, 1978, by a representative of the 3M Company that a generally licensed 3M Model 315 static eliminator bar containing 39 millicuries of polonium-210 was involved in a fire at the Brown Company in Parchment, Michigan on March 22, 1978.

During the fire which lasted more than an hour the automatic sprinkler M

, ' system was actuated and discharged a considerable amount of water on the 3 static eliminator bar and associated equipment.

During the fire the a

{ j plastic covering was burned off and the bar became warped.

The 3M representative recommended that due to the intensity of the fire and the volume of water discharged from the sprinkler system it would be 3/)

/

uesirable to make a thorough survey of the static eliminator bar and surrounding areas to check for possible contamination from the polonium-210 microspheres.

The Michigan State Health Department will conduct the survey on March 28, 1978, and will advise RIII of their J

findings.
