SUBJECT:
UNPLANNED RELEASE OF RADI0 ACTIVE MATERIAL On March 7, 1978, 10,000 pounds of (natural grade) uranium hexafloride was inadvertently released when the failure of a lift mechanism caused a 14-ton feed cylinder to fall approximately 20 inches resulting in a l
2-inch hole in the cylinder.
ssal One building onsite was contaminated and the occupants evacuated.

Offsite sampling is in progress; no inj,uries were reported but possible internal contamination to onsite workers is being evaluated.
