REPORT OF TWO STATIC ELIMINATOR BARS CONTAINING 60 MILLI-CURIES AND 90 MILLICURIES, RESPECTIVELY, 0F POLONIUM-210 INVOLVED IN A FIRE RIII was notified that two generally licensed 3M Model 315 static e11minator bars containing 50 millicuries and 90 millicuries of polonium-210 were j
involved in a fire at the Weber Valentine Company in Elk Grove Village, J
Illinois on April 1,1978.
During the intense fire, which lasted about 2 minutes, the automatic Ls!H!
sprinkler system was actuated and discharged a considerable amount 4
of water on the static eliminator bars and associated equipment.

A.RIII inspector will be on site on April 5, 1978 to make appropriate

radiation surveys.

There has been no media interest and none is anticipated. The Illinois I
State Health Department will be notified of this event.
NRC, Region III (Chicago) received notification by telephone call from a representative of 3M Company at 10:00 a.m. on April 5,1978.
