April 26, 1978 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-78-95 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSI BLE safety or public interest significance.

LEAD STORAGE CONTAINERS LABELED 500 MILLIGRAMS CESIUM-137 FOUND BY POLICE IN PRIVATE HOME A representative of DOE notified RIII that the Cook County, Illinois Sheriff's Police were serving an eviction notice at an apartment in Wheeling, Illinois and found three lead containers about the size of beer cans which were labeled:
500 MG Cs-137, December 14, 1972, 3M Company.
A police officer opened one of the containers and.it appeared to be empty.

An RIII inspector has been dispatched to the site.
The State of Illinois was contacted and one of their representatives has also been dispatched to the site.
No information regarding media interest is available at this time nor is a press release by NRC, RIII planned at this time.
NRC, RIII (Chicago) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from a representative of DOE at 12:45 p.m. April 26, 1978.
