THEFT OF MOLYBDENUM-99/ TECHNETIUM-99 RADI0 ISOTOPE GENERATORS WHILE IN TRANSIT l
U. S. Priority Transport reported that one of its trucks was forceably

entered at 2:30 AM on June 30, 1978 while making a delivery at the i
Providence Hospital, Holyoke, Massachusetts.
Three molybdenum-99/
Technetium-99 nuclear medicine radioisotope generators were removed.
The generators were manufacturers by E. R. Squibb and Sons, Inc. (L/N 29-139-02), New Brunswick, New Jersey and were consigned fo the following
- hospitals:
North Adams Hospital, North Adams, Massachusetts (L/N 20-

13682-01), Franklin County Public Hospital, Greenfield, Massachusetts l
(L/N 20-2399-01), and Fairview Hospital, Great Barrington, Massachusetts
(- }
(L/N 20-15295-01). These generators contained 440, 440 and 220 millicuries of molybdenum-99/ Technetium-99 respectively.
Radiation levels from the shipping containers at three feet from the surface are 2.2 millirems / hour I
for the 440 millicurie generators and 1.2 millirems / hour for the 220 millicurie generator.
E. R. Squibb and Sons, Inc. has been contacted by Region I and supplied the data on activity in each generator.
The l
radiation levels were obtained from the bill of lading carries on the U.
S. Priority Transport truck.
The generators consist of a small tube containin material within a lead shield in a plastic case.g the radioactive The entire assembly is within a cardboard box which is clearly identified as containing radio-l active material.
The outer shipping container is a heavy cardboard box about 16"x14"x15" and weighs about 20 pounds.
The boxes carried the Department of Transportation Yellow III shipping label.
The Massachusetts State Police and Holyoke, Massachusetts Police have been not4fied and have started an investigation.
Region I is maintain-o i
ing contact with all cor.cerned parties and advising all parties on safety measures to follow should the packages be located.
Media interest is expected because of the nature of the occurrence.
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has been informed.
