SECOND JOINT STATUS REPORT Counsel' for Alabama Power Company and the NRC Staff hereby file this Second Joint Status Report, as required by the Board

.in its order of July'17, 1989.

Discovery in this proceeding has. commenced and is ongoing.

'Each party has now provided a' response to the other's initial reTaost for production.of documents. The parties may serve second requests-for production. In addition, during the weeks

- of September 4 and'11, 1989, Alabama Power Company conducted four preliminary depositions of the NRC Staff's potential witnesses (exclusive of the Staff's consultant to be retained shortly). The NRC Staff is currently planning to depose Alabama Power Company's witnesses during late October or early November, 1989. Alabama Power Company may also depose additional NRC Staff representatives during this same time.

In light of these developments, the parties expect at,the. i time of the next Status Report to seek leave of the. Board to.

extend the schedule for discovery. In addition, at~that time, the parties currently' intend to provide their' views ~on the direction'and schedule for the further conduct of this proceeding, including pretrial motions.
