Operatmg License No. DPR-50 Docket No. 50-289 10 CFR 50 Appendix R Exemption Request - Additional Information GPU Nuclear letter to the NRC dated September 8,1997 (6710-97-2373) provided responses to NRC,
request for additional information dated July 30,1997 (6710-97-3347). GPU Nuclear response to NRC Question No. 5 contained in the above referenced letters described the one (1), acetylene gas 1/2 inch diameter welded steel pipe line in fire area CB-FA-L This line is located above the suspended ceiling and the wet pipe sprinkler system in CB-FA-1. The fire risk associated with this line is considered low as described in GPU Nuclear letter dated July 30,1997. However, in outer to further support the pending exemption request for 1-hour Thermo-Lag fire barriers in CB-FA-1, GPU Nuclear proposes to remove this line from above the suspended ceiling in fire area CB-FA-1 and either relocate the line to below the suspended ceiling in CB-FA-1 or eliminate the line from CB-FA-1 and install an l
alternative gas supply at the point of use. Relocation of the line within CB-FA-1 would move the line g
so that it does not present an exposure to the Thermo-Lag barriers above the false ceiling and would place the line under the wet pipe sprinkler system which covers CB-FA-1 below the false ceiling.
Wo Proposed. plant modifications as described aboye _would be completed by December 31, 1999, consistent with the TMI-l Thenno-Lag resolution schedule, to provide the additional safety margin to support the basis for the requested 1-hour Thermo-Lag fire barrier exemption in CB-FA-1.
. lf additional information is required, please contact Mr. David J. Distel, GPU Nuclear Licensing and
. Regulatory Affairs at (973) 316-7955.
