REGISTRY OF RADIOACTIVE SEALED SOURCES AND DEVICES SAFETY EVALUATION OF SEALED SOURCE l
l NO.: NR-460-S-887-S DATE: January 26, 1996 PAGE 2 OF 6 SEALED SOURCE TYPE:
Sealed Source j
l DESCRIPTION:
The Model 4D6D is a doubly-encapsulated point source.
Cesium-137 is absorbed into small ceramic particles ranging from 0.001-0.008 in. (30-200 microns) in diameter.
The isotope is permanently affixed to the particles with a heat treatment to create 3M Brand Radiating Microspheres.
The microspheres are loaded into a 0.180 in. (0.457 cm) long inner capsule with a diameter of 0.250 in. (0.635 cm).
The cavity of this inner capsule is 0.140 in. (0.356 cm) deep and is nominally 0.171 in.
(0.434 cm) in diameter.
There is an opening on one end of this capsule.
The inner capsule and inner plug are made from type 304 stainless steel.
After loading the microspheres, a nominally 0.171 in. (0.434 cm) l diameter, 0.040 in. (0.102 cm) thick inner welding plug is inserted into the inner capsule and silver brazed irto place, sealing the radioactive material inside the inner capsule.
The entire assembly is then placed, plug end facing in, inside an outer capsule.
The outer capsule is 0.437 in. (1.110 cm) long and 0.375 in. (0.953 cm) in diameter.
There are two hollow cavities in the outer capsule.
One cavity is made with a #21 bit and a #10 tap and extends 0.159 in. (0.404 cm) into the capsule.
The other cavity, where the inner capsule assembly is inserted, l
is 0.230 in. (0.584 cm) deep and nominally 0.255 in. (0.648 cm) i in diameter.
An outer welding plug is inserted after the inner capsule and is heliarc welded into place, sealing in the inner capsule.
The outer capsule and outer plug are made from type 304 l
stainless steel.
l l
The completely assembled 4D6D source is 0.437 in. (1.110 cm) long and 0.375 in. (0.953 cm) in diameter.

Sealed Source LABELING:
The following information was engraved on the exterior of the outer capsule:
3M Company X mc Cs-137 Serial XXX Model 4D6D Date
. CONDITIONS OF NORMAL USE:
The 4D6D sealed source was intended for use in applications where a high-integrity gamma source was needed, particularly where extreme environmental conditions were involved.
A cypical example of this type of environment is industrial gauging.
PROTOTYPE TESTING:
A prototype of the Model -iD6D source was tested according to the specifications of ANSI N542-1977 and achieved a classification of 77C66546.
A prototype model of this source loaded with 100.0 millicuries (3.700 GBq) of cesium-137 was subjected to the following tests:
- 1. Heat Test - Heat the source at 932*F (500*C) for 30 minutes.
- 2. Quench Test - Quench the source from 932*F (500*C) to cold water temperature.
- 4. Impact Test - Drop a weight generating 2.0 ft-lb (2.7 N) on the sides of the source at two points 180* apart, performing the test 20 times at each point.

PROTOTYPE TESTING: (Continued)
After each test the source was wipe tested and leak tested.
The wipe tests were counted in a detection instrument capable of detecting less than 0.0001 yCi (3.700 Bq) of cesium-137.
All wipes showed less than 0.0001 4Ci (3.700 Bq) of removable cesium-137.
The leak tests were performed by immersing the source for a minimum of 10 seconds in water at 200'F (93.3'C) and observi.1g any bubbles generated.
All leak tests were negative.
EXTERNAL RADIATION LEVELS:
External radiation dose rates were calculated for a 10.00 Ci (370.0 GBq) Cs-137 source as follows:
Distance Maximum Radiation Level (from surface)
(cm)
(in.)
(R/hr)
(Sv/hr) 5 1.97 1320 13.2 30 11.81 36.6 0.37 100 39.37 3.3 0.033 OUALITY ASSURANCE AND CONTROL:
The following quality control procedures were followed during production of this source:
- 1. After the inner plug was silver brazed in place, the inner capsule was cleaned until wipe tests showed less than 0.0005 Ci.(18.50 Bq) of removable cesium-137.

- 2. After the outer plug was heliarc welded into place, the source was wipe tested.
If the wipe yielded more than 0.0001 Ci (3.700 Bq) of removable cesium-137 the source was cleaned until the 0.0001 Ci (3.700 Bq) wipe test limit was l
reached.

If I
the wipe test yielded more than 0.0001 Ci (3.700 Bq) of removable cesium-137, the source was rejected.
'4.
Before shipment, the source was again wipe tested.
This wipe also had to show less than 0.0001 Ci (3.700 Bq) of i
removable cesium-137 or the source was rejected.

SAFETY ANALYSIS
SUMMARY
The Model 4D6D source is not a current product manufactured or distributed by 3M Health Physics Services.
However, 3M Health i
Physics Services will continue to receive Model 4D6D sources for i
disposal.
1 Based on our review of the Model 4D6D source, and the information and test data cited below, we continue to conclude that this sealed source is acceptable for specific licensing purposes.
Furthermore, we continue to conclude that the Model 4D6D source would be expected to maintain its containment integrity for normal conditions of use and accidental conditions which might occur during uses specified in this certificate.

February 12, 1996 NOTE T0:
MINNESOTA MINING AND MANUFACTURING (3M) INACTIVE FILES hf FROM:
SUBJECT:
INACTIVATION OF REGISTRATIONS BASED ON AUGUST 6, 1991, LETTER.
A number of the background files for the registration certificates requested (by 3M letter dated August 6, 1991) to be made inactive contain limited information on the products. A search of 3M registration, archive, and license files, and information in NUDOCS was performed to obtain additional information. Also, 3M was contacted to obtain any additional information that may have been in their files.
3M provided limited additional information concerning these products and indicated that the information provided represented all additional information in their files.
Additional information obtained from these sources has been added to the applicable registration files.
At the present time, the information contained in the background registration files represents all available information for these products.
In addition, a number of these products were originally reviewed and approved by the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC).
The reviews performed for these products to make the certificates inactive were based on the information available, the previous reviews and approvals, and the historical use of the products (i.e., reports of failures or design problems, or the lack thereof).
In several instances, insufficient information was available to perform an adequate safety review.
In these instances, the certificates have been reissued based solely on the original AEC review and approval, and no additional safety review was performed.
