Bremsstrahlung Source DESCRIPTION:
The SF1H is a thin window, doubly-encapsulated bremsstrahlung source.
Strontium-90 (Sr-90) is absorbed and permanently fixed into small ceramic particles using a heat treatment to create 3M Brand Radiating Microspheres.
The microspheres are mixed with an equal amount of aluminum powder to facilitate generation of bremsstrahlung (x-ray) radiation.
The microspheres / aluminum powder mixture is loaded into an inner capsule made from type 304 stainless steel tubing.
The inner capsule is 0.625 in. (1.588 cm) long, has an outer diameter of 0.745 in. (1.892 cm), and an inner diameter of 0.499 in. (1.267 cm).
A 0.002 in. (0.005 cm) thick, type 304 stainless steel window is gold brazed onto one end of the capsule.
An inner press fit plug is inserted into the inner capsule behind the active material and either welded or silver brazed in place, sealing the radioactive material inside.
The plug has a diameter of 0.500 in. (1.270 cm) and is 0.580 in.
(1.473 cm) thick.
The entire inner assembly is inserted into an outer capsule 1.070 in. (2.718 cm) long with a diameter of 0.875 in. (2.223 cm) made from type 304 stainless steel tubing.
A 0.002 in. (0.005 cm) thick, type 304 stainless steel window is gold brazed onto one end of the capsule.
The capsule has an outer diameter of 0.875 in. (2.223 cm) and an inner diameter of 0.750 in.
(1.905 cm).
The inner assembly is inserted so that the inner window and the outer window are on the same side.
A 0.745 in.
(1.892 cm) diameter, 0.180 in. (0.457 cm) spacer is inserted into the outer capsule.
A 0.751 in. (1.908 cm) diameter, 0.250 in.
(0.635 cm) thick, type 304 stainless steel outer plug is inserted after the spacer.
The whole assembly is inserted into a cup-shaped housing.
The housing is 1.094 in. (2.779 cm) long with a diameter of 1.313 in.
(3.335 cm), with a 0.094 in. (0.239 cm) thick flange that extends the diameter to 1.938 in. (4.923 cm) at one end.
A cavity 0.980 in. (2.489 cm) long with a diameter of 0.880 in. (2.235 cm) opens on that end.
The other end has a 0.020 in. (0.051 cm) thick wall with a 0.500 in. (1.270 cm) diameter hole in its center.

XXX mc Sr-90 Serial XXXX Model 5F1H Date CONDITIONS OF NORMAL USE:
The sealed source is for use in gauging devices and is installed in gauging devices by the device manufacturer.
EBOTOTYPE TESTING:
3M stated that no Model 5F1H prototype sources have been tested.
3M reasoned that since this source was identical in construction to the 3F1E source, all prototype testing results of the Model 3F1E source was applicable to the Model 5F1H.
The 3F1E source was1 tested in accordance with ANSI N542-1977 and achieved a classification of 77C53343,

Bremsstrahlung Source EXTERNAL RADIATION LEVELS:
As referenced in the 1984 Edition of the Radiological Health Handbook, Rules of Thumb, when beta particles from a 1.000 Ci (37.00 GBq) source of SrY-90 are absorbed, the bremsstrahlung hazard is approximately equal to that presented by the gammas from 0.0004 oz. (12 mg) of radium.
Based upon this, the external radiation levels were calculated for a 0.0004 oz. (12 mg)-radium point source.
The results of the calculations are as follows:
Distance Maximum Radiation Level Outside 0.004 in.
(from surface)
(0.102 cm) Thick SS-304 Shielding (cm)

(R/hr)

Bremsstrahlung Source LIMITATIONS AND/OR OTHER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE:
This source may be used only by persons specifically licensed by the NRC or an Agreement State.
i l
Handling, storage, use, transfer, and disposal:
to be L
determined by the licensing authority.
t l'
This source shall not be subjected to environmental or'other-conditions of use which exceed ANSI Classification ~77C53343 (ANSI.N542-1977).
l This source shall be leak tested at intervals not to exceed 6 months using techniques' capable of detecting 0.005 microcurie (185.0 Bq) of removable contamination.
This registration sheet and the information contained within l
the' references shall not be changed without the written consent of the NRC.
H SAFETY ANALYSIS
SUMMARY
The Model SF1H source is not a current product manufactured or l
distributed by 3M Health Physics Services.
However, 3M Health Physics Services will continue to receive Model SF1H sources for disposal.
i i
BasedJon our review of the.Model SF1H source, and the information and test data cited below, we' continue to conclude that this l
source is acceptable for specific licensing purposes.
l Furthermore, we continue to conclude that the Model SF1H source j
"would be expected ~to maintain its containment integrity for normal conditions-of.use and accidental conditions which might i
L occur during uses specified in this certificate.

February 12, 1996 NOTE T0:
MINNES0TA MINING AND MANUFACTURING (3M) INACTIVE FILES hf FROM:
SUBJECT:
INACTIVATION OF REGISTRATIONS BASED ON AUGUST 6, 1991, LETTER.
I l
A number of the background files for the registration certificates requested l
(by 3M letter dated August 6, 1991) to be made inactive contain limited information on the products. A search of 3M registration, archive, and license files, and information in NUDOCS was performed to obtain additional information. Also, 3M was contacted to obtain any additional information that I
may have been in their files. 3M provided limited additional information concerning these products and indicated that the information provided i
represented all additional information in their files.
Additional information obtained from these sources has been added to the applicable registration files.
]
At the present time, the information contained in the background registration j
files represents all available information for these products.
In addition, a number of these products were originally reviewed and approved by the Atomic l
Energy Commission (AEC).
The reviews performed for these products to make the l
certificates inactive were based on the information available, the previous reviews and approvals, and the historical use of the products (i.e., reports of failures or design problems, or the lack thereof).
In several instances, insufficient information was available to perform an adequate safety review.
In these instances, the certificates have been reissued based solely on the original AEC review and approval, and no additional safety review was performed.
