United States Senator l
961 Federal Building 1
Dear Senator Bentsen:
I am responding to your letter of March 3,1989, which enclosed a letter from Ms. Carol Wells describing Trip-A-Larm, a system for detecting false alarms at power plants and other installations and requesting " advice or suggestions of people who might be interested in such a system."
i My staff have reviewed the material sent by Ms. Wells. The articles and descriptive material indicate that Trip-A-Lann is being marketed to the nuclear powe' industry and that the company has been in touch with the Electric Power Research Institute and with individual utilities that operate nuclear power plants. The staff believe tSat this is the proper approach for introducing a new product to the utilities.
As you may know, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission does not usually review products proposed for use in the nuclear industry unless a licensee or applicant for a license proposes to use it in his facility to perform a safety function. This is further reason for encouraging the Trip-A-Larm Corporation to continue their present approach if they would like to see their product used in nuclear power plants.
I hope this responds to your constituent's inquiry.
Sincerely, p Victor Stello, Jr. '
