REGISTRY OF RADIOACTIVE SEALED SOURCES AND DEVICES SAFETY EVALUATION OF SEALED SOURCE NO.: NR-460-S-913-S DATE: January 26, 1996 PAGE 2 OF 7 SEALED SOURCE TYPE:

Beta Gauge Source DESCRIPTION:

The.Model 3G9A is a combination beta source.

The outer capsule is 1.094 in. (2.779 cm) long with an outer diameter of 1.313 in.

(3.335 cm), and an inner diameter of 1.10 in. (2.79 cm).

A 0.020 in. (0.051 cm) thick, partial wall reduces the diameter of the opening on one end of the capsule (where Kr-85 is encapsulated) to 0.940 in. (2.388 cm).

At the other end of the capsule, a 0.094 in. (0.239 cm) thick flange encircles the capsule, increasing the outer diameter to 1.938 in. (4.923 cm).

A 0.002 in. (0.005 cm) thick window is gold brazed across the mouth of the Kr-85 capsule.

The Kr-85 capsule is 0.425 in.

(1.080 cm) long, with a 1.093 in. (2.776 cm) outer diameter and a 0.940 in. (2.388 cm) inner diameter.

A 0.050 in. (0.127 cm) thick, partial wall reduces the opening at the end opposite the brazed-on window to 0.500 in. (1.270 cm).

A 0.064 in. (0.163 cm) diameter hole is drilled through this partial wall and a small copper filling tube is brazed into it.

A second 0.002 in.

(0.005 cm) thick window is gold brazed across the small opening on the outer side of the Kr-85 capsule.

The assembled Kr-85 unit

'is inserted into the outer capsule, filling tube facing out, and pressed against the restricted (0.940 in./2.388 cm diameter) opening of the outer capsule.

The Kr-85 capsule is then filled with Kr-85 gas-and sealed by soldering the filling tube shut.

The Sr-90 capsule is 0.540 in. (1.372 cm) long.

The bottom 0.250 in. (0.635 cm) of that length has a 1.093 in. (2.776 cm) outer diameter, while the remaining 0.290 in. (0.737 cm) of length has a 0.750 in. (1.905 cm) outer diameter.

There is a 0.250 in. (0.635 cm) diameter shaft through the center of the Sr-90 capsule.

A 0.002 in. (0.005 cm) thick window is gold brazed across the narrow end of the capsule.

Strontium-90 is absorbed into small ceramic particles using a proprietary heat treatment to form 3M Brand Radiating Microspheres.

After the microspheres are loaded into the Sr-90 L

capsule, a 0.250 in. (0.635 cm) diameter, 0.400 in. (1.016 cm) thick plug is inserted into the capsule and welded in place, sealing the microspheres inside.

The Sr-90 capsule is then l

Finally, a 1.093 in. (2.776 cm)' diameter, 0.094 in. (0.239 cm) thick ~back plug is inserted-behind the Sr-90. capsule and-welded in place, sealing both the Sr-90.and Kr-85 capsules'inside.

The windows are made from type 302 stainless steel, while the-y capsules and plugs are made from type 304 stainless steel.

Beta Gauge Source PROTOTYPE TESTING: (Continued) engineering analyses for evaluation of the construction.

For evaluation of the Kr-85 source, 3M referred to Models 3E4G, 3E4H, 3E4L, and 3E4S.

For evaluation of the Sr-90 source, 3M referred to Models 3F1E and 3F1G.

Samples of Models 3E4G, 3E4H, and 3E4L were tested in accordance with the specifications of ANSI N542-1977 and each achieved a classification of 77C32231.

Samples of Models 3F1E'and 3F1G were also tested in accordance with the specifications of ANSI N542-1977 and each achieved a classification of 77C53343 and 77C45343, respectively.

EXTERNAL RADIATION LEVELS:

-3M reported that the Model 3E4G Kr-85 source was essentially l

identical in construction to the Kr-85 source used in the Model 3G9A.

3M calculated the following dose rates for a 1,500 mci (55.50 GBq) Model 3E4G Kr-85 source from dose rates obtained using an 800.0 millicurie (29.60 GBq) source' CONTACT 11.8" (30 cm) to Center of Detector 926 R/hr (9.26 Sv/hr) 36 R/hr (360 mSv/hr) j

.I OUALITY ASSURANCE AND CONTROL:

]

The following quality contro1' procedures were followed during the production of this source:

1. An empty Kr-85 capsule was pressurized to 1,00 psi (689.5 kPa), while immersed in liquid.

Observation of any bubbles coming from the capsule was an indication of failure of this test.

2. The completed Kr-85 capsule was stored for 24 hours2.777778e-4 days
0.00667 hours
3.968254e-5 weeks
9.132e-6 months
in a closed vessel and a sample of the gas in the~ container was tested for leakage of krypton-85 gas using a sniffer-type instrument.

Positive indication of the presence of Kr-85 was cause for the rejection of the source.

~3.:The Sr-90 capsule'was wipe tested immediately after fabrication.

The maximum allowable amount of detectable contamination was,0.001 Ci (37.00 Bq).

If the wipe test detected more, removable activity than that, the capsule failed the test.

'4.

The completed Sr-90fcapsule was bubble, leak tested by.

= immersing it in glycerine at 302'*F ( 15 0 ' C) '.

If any bubbles were observed coming from the capsule, it failed the test.

5..The entire assembly was wipe tested and visually inspected' before shipment to the customer.

The wipe test limit was the same as in procedure 3,-above.

LIMITATIONS AND/OR OTHER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE:

Handling, storage, use, transfer, and disposti:

to be

' determined by the licensing authority.

This source shall'be leak. tested at intervals not to exceed 6 months using-techniques capable of detecting 0.005 #Ci

_(185.0 Bq) of removable contamination.

 • 1This registration sheet and the information contained within the references shall not be changed without the written consent of the NRC.

INACTIVATION OF REGISTRATIONS BASED ON AUGUST 6, 1991, LETTER. A number of the background files for the registration certificates requested (by 3M letter dated August 6, 1991) to be made inactive contain limited information on the products. A search of 3M registration, archive, and license files, and information in NUDOCS was performed to obtain additional information. Also, 2M was contacted to obtain any additional information that may have been in their files. 3M provided limited additional information concerning these products and indicated that the information provided represented all additional information in their files. Additional information obtained from these sources has been added to the applicable registration i files. At the present time, the information contain-the background registration i a files represents all available information - .hese products. In addition, a number of these products were originally reviewed and approved by the Atomic l Energy Commission (AEC). The reviews performed for these products to make the certificates inactive were based on the information available, the previous reviews and approvals, and the historical use of the products (i.e., reports i of failures or design problems, or the lack thereof). In several instances, l insufficient information was available to perform an adequate safety review, i In these instances, the certificates have been reissued based solely on the original AEC review and approval, and no additional safety review was performed. i 'f \\\\ l 0 L-
